A native of Santa Clarita, James “DJ” Hamburger graduated from Canyon High School, College of the Canyons, and the American University in Washington, DC. During his formal education, he studied at l’Université de Paris IV, La Sorbonne in Paris, FR through the American Institute for Foreign Study.
He currently serves as a battalion staff officer in the Army National Guard, teaches French in our local high schools, and serves as a board member for the iLEAD Charter Schools District. He was impacted by the school shooting at Saugus High School on November 14, 2019 which received significant national media coverage.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, DJ was on active duty in response to the Presidential Declaration of Emergency, FEMA-19 order. In this capacity, he and his unit backfilled the Los Angeles Police and Sherrif’s departments during the social unrest of June 2020, backfilled CAL Fire crews for type II and type I wildland firefighting during the worst fire season in California history, and volunteered to take the experimental COVID-19 vaccine to ensure its general safety before its release to the broader public.
At the conclusion of the emergency, DJ was a battle captain at the Joint Operations Center at the Joint Forces Headquarters in Sacramento, CA responsible for all California Military Department operational tracking and reporting for the Adjutant General.
